The issue of abortion has once again come to center stage in our political life, and once again, I am hearing those opposed to abortion for religious reasons make their argument with specious claims.

Let me begin my own view on this issue by noting that I am not pro abortion and I have never met anyone who would claim to have such a view. What I do believe is that there are times when a pregnant woman is faced with a difficult problem that might call for difficult solutions including, perhaps, the use of an abortion.

To this end, the very religious among us claim that the word of God found in their Old Testament of the Christian Bible in the Book of Exodus, Chapter 21, Verse 22, specifically states that a fetus in the womb of a woman is equal to the life of the born human male and female. But in fact, the words found in this verse actually show the reverse is true.

The Old Testament, does, in many verses, note that the wrongful taking of a human life by another human requires that said life of the murderer also be taken. But the above verse regarding a fetus says otherwise, namely, that if one wrongfully causes the destruction of a fetus without also causing the death of the woman holding said fetus, the person causing such destruction shall be forced by the husband of the woman to pay a fine. Kill a person, and pay with your life; destroy a fetus, and pay with your finances.

Again, I am not pro abortion, but if my wife, one of my daughters, one of my female cousins or friends were ever to come to me with news that they were seeking an abortion because of a serious medical or other type of issue, I would choose to support the woman before me whose life for the moment was in the balance.

Bottom line. I am pro choice. If one believes deeply that one could never have an abortion no matter the circumstances, so be it. But for those who feel the opposite, I support their right to act as they see fit as well.
