I continue to find myself confused over the argument and debate we Americans are having about healthcare for our American people. Those on the conservative side of the political spectrum are using the word "socialism" to argue against the concept of a universal and government supported healthcare system as if such a form of healthcare, a form that has been adopted and that works for most of our democratic allies, would be a disaster for us. But one never hears these same conservatives complaining about socialism when this same described "socialist process" is used to support our incredibly expensive American military system or our funded state and national programs that work to build and repair our infrastructure of roads and bridges. Likewise, it would appear that socialism is acceptable by conservatives if it is a function of supporting our local and state police and fire departments, our state and federal court systems our local public school systems and more.
If it makes sense to support our military with public funding and if it helps one and all of us Americans to use American tax dollars to keep our infrastructure safe and available to us all, if it is in our public interest and in the interest of each and every one of us Americans to do all of the above and more, then I contend that it is equally in the interest of all of us to provide a healthcare system for all of America that allows for preventive care on a regular basis and all of the healthcare that is necessary for the treatment of those medical problems that surface daily among our people.
One final note. Our current healthcare system shows a cost that is found to be at least twice as much per person in our country as compared to the cost experienced by all of our allies. From my vantage point, our allies are currently doing better in the area of healthcare than are we. In this particular area, I would like my America to begin to follow their lead.
