Hoping to see an end to the disease of human bias and hatred.

Of all the interesting wise sayings that have been passed down from generation to generation, one of the most meaningful for me is the one that goes, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”

Yes, our world is currently in a dangerous spiral, but this is nothing new. Today’s Islamic terrorists who feel comfortable in killing so many innocent victims of every race and religion, including members of their own faith, have learned well from the history of too many other religions.

For instance, where were the vast majority of Germans who were Catholics and evangelical Christians, and why were they not standing up during the 1930s to decry Hitler’s incredibly immoral and disastrous policies that eventually caused the deaths of millions of people seen by Hitler to be less human than was he?

Reach out to your friends and neighbors and talk to them about the difficult experiences their families encountered when they became the new migrants to our America. If they were Italian, Irish, Asian, Jewish, people of color and so many more of those different from others, too many encountered the wide range of racial, religious and ethnic bias and hatred that has forever been a part of our human tradition.

Ask yourself how a nation like ours, with so many citizens who claim that we are a spiritual and religious nation, and with so many citizens who spend so much time in churches and other religious venues, can talk about being lovers of God while at the same time doing little or nothing to actually do God’s work when it comes to treating thy neighbor as you would thyself.

For me, one of the central questions still left to be answered by us humans is, “When will we humans finally understand that all of us, no matter our ethnic, religious or gender background, are all pretty much 99.9 percent the same and should be judged not on our beliefs, but on our actual daily actions?”
